What is "Responsible" AI/DI ("RAIDI")?  It is the discipline of maximizing the positive social value of these powerful technologies, while minimizing their negative impacts.  

There have been two RAIDI Summit meetings: in 2018 in Palo Alto CA and in 2019 in New York City.   Both meetings have attracted world-class speakers who are passionate about this subject, such as Vint Cerf, Peter Selfridge, and Barney Pell.

About

Where are we going, and what do data, AI, and DI have to do with it? How do we solve the hardest problems faced by humanity, while minimizing the downsides, and can technology help?  Does the future see us working hand-in-hand with advanced tech, or is it the Robot Apocolypse?

With an exploding interest in DI driven by Cassie Kozyrkov at Google, this year’s publication of Link: How Decision Intelligence Connects Data, Actions, and Outcomes for a Better World, along with AI experiencing growing pains as it moves into the mass market, thought leaders worldwide are starting to ask: “What role can this technology play in solving the problems we face as a species?” and, “How can we wield these powerful tools for the maximum good with minimum negative side-effects?”

Please join us for a gathering of senior thought leaders to share our diverse perspectives from technology, economics, national intelligence, strategic foresight, and more.   Now in its second year, the Responsible AI/DI summit is unique opportunity to participate in a new discipline as it is unfolding.

Vint Cerf

Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, Google

Vinton G. Cerf co-designed the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet and is Chief Internet Evangelist for Google.   He is a former member of the National Science Board and current member of the National Academy of Engineering and Foreign Member of the British Royal Society and Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of ACM, IEEE, AAAS, and BCS.

Cerf received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, US National Medal of Technology, Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, Prince of Asturias Award, Japan Prize, ACM Turing Award, Legion d’Honneur, the Franklin Medal, the Catalunya International Prize and 29 honorary degrees.

 

Nicole Helmer

With 10 years of experience managing cross-functional teams to deliver customer-centered, data-driven projects in research, marketing, and product development, Nikki currently uses advanced analytics to understand the rational and emotional drivers of human decision making to drive early-stage startup development and growth.

VR Ferose

Senior VP & Head of SAP Academy for Engineering

Ferose heads SAP’s Academy for Engineering. Formerly head of the company’s Globalization Services unit, he was responsible for enabling the global adoption of SAP products.

He is also Director on the Board of Specialisterne Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation with the goal to create one million jobs for people with autism and similar challenges, and has co-authored “Gifted, ” a best-seller about people with disabilities and GRIT: a graphic novel about India’s first Blade Runner.

Lorien Pratt

Co-Founder and Chief Scientist at Quantellia

Recognized by the Woman Innovators and Inventors Project in 2017, Pratt has been delivering AI and DI solutions for her clients for over 30 years, and is known for the invention of machine learning transfer.  Client have included the Human Genome Project, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the US Department of Energy, and the Administrative Office of the US Courts. Formerly a computer science professor, Pratt is a popular international speaker and has given two TEDx talks.

Her Quantellia team offers AI, DI, and full-stack software solutions to clients worldwide. Previously a leading technology analyst, Pratt has also authored dozens of academic papers, and co-edited the book: Learning to Learn. Pratt’s next book: Link: How Decision Intelligence makes the Invisible Visible (Emerald Press) will be released in September. Josh Kerbel

Research Faculty, US National Intelligence University

Josh Kerbel is a member of the research faculty at the National Intelligence University—the U.S. Intelligence Community’s sole accredited and degree-granting educational/research institution. At NIU his primary research focus is the future of intelligence analysis. In particular, he explores the disruptive innovations demanded by a security environment that is fundamentally different (i.e., exponentially more complex) from the Cold War environment that still profoundly—and problematically—shapes the IC’s legacy mindsets, processes, and habits.

Prior to joining NIU, Mr. Kerbel held senior—analytically-focused—positions in the Defense Intelligence Agency; the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, including the National Intelligence Council; on the Navy staff; in the Central Intelligence Agency; and with the Office of Naval Intelligence.

His unclassified writings on the intersections of government (especially intelligence) and complexity have been published in Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, Studies in Intelligence, The National Interest, War on the Rocks, Defense One, Parameters, and other outlets.

Mr. Kerbel has degrees from the George Washington University and the London School of Economics, as well as professional certifications from the Naval War College and the Naval Postgraduate School. He was also a post-graduate (Seminar XXI) fellow in the Center for International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Frank Spencer

Co-Founder, the Futures School, and Creative Director, Kedge LLC

Frank is a published author and speaker, delivering presentations and workshops around the globe. He holds a MA in Strategic Foresight from Regent University.

With a strong background in both business and academic foresight, Frank was the creator and lead instructor of The Futures Institute: Shaping The Future Now at the Duke University Talent Identification Program Institute. He has worked on foresight for companies like Kraft, Mars, and Marriott.

Frank also led the effort to establish foresight as a leadership competency across The Walt Disney Company, training over 300 employees across the globe. He is the founding partner at Kedge, a foresight, innovation, creativity and strategic design firm.

Frank is also co-founder of The Futures School, a multi-disciplinary Strategic Foresight training program. He’s created a worldwide network of foresight campuses in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. More than 500 global citizens have joined The Futures School movement to embody a future-empowered mindset.

Nora Bateson (joining via video)

Founder and President, International Bateson Institute (IBI)

Her work asks the question “How we can improve our perception of the complexity we live within, so we may improve our interaction with the world?”.

She wrote, directed and produced the award-winning documentary, An Ecology of Mind, a portrait of her father, Gregory Bateson.

Nora’s work brings the fields of biology, cognition, art, anthropology, psychology, and information technology together into a study of the patterns in ecology of living systems.

Her book, Small Arcs of Larger Circles, released by Triarchy Press, UK, 2016 is a revolutionary personal approach to the study of systems and complexity.

Peter Selfridge

Global Head of Digital Government, SAP

The Digital Government unit at SAP encourages the digital transformation of government decision-making and services worldwide. Peter is specifically responsible for promoting technological transformation in the public sector and the positive role played by digital technologies in addressing economic and societal challenges around the world.

Peter was the U.S. Chief of Protocol during the second term of the Obama Administration, where he served as the President’s representative to the foreign diplomatic corps posted in Washington, D.C. His other duties included greeting visiting foreign leaders to the capital; supporting presidential delegations on their overseas travel; and planning and executing high-level summits and multilateral events.

Formerly, he served as President Obama’s Advance and Operations Director, a position he previously managed for Vice President Biden during the first two years of the Obama Administration. He began his career in Washington, D.C. as a staff member for U.S. Senator Tom Harkin, and later served as a scheduling assistant to President William J. Clinton. Peter also served on the presidential campaigns of Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama.

Peter is no stranger to the private sector having worked for Citigate Communications as well as Rendezvous Consulting, where he helped various clients develop and execute on their communications strategies. In 2007, he worked at the William J. Clinton Foundation as the organization’s city director in Los Angeles.

In addition to his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Iowa, Peter has a Master’s Degree in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University. He is a native of Minnetonka, Minnesota and is married to Parita Shah. The couple lives in Washington, D.C.

Reid Blackman

Founder and CEO, Virtue

After 15 years of being an academic philosopher, Reid founded Virtue, an ethics consultancy that focuses on corporate governance and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, biotech, and virtual/augmented reality. He works with senior leadership to devise strategies and policies that mitigate ethical risk and with product developers to incorporate ethically responsible design practices.

Prior to launching Virtue, Reid was a Fellow at the Parr Center for Ethics at UNC Chapel Hill and a professor of philosophy at Colgate University. He received his B.A. from Cornell University, his M.A. from Northwestern University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in Austin.

Reid sits on the “Methods to Guide Ethical Research and Design” committee for the IEEE Global Initiative on the Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems and is a member of the EU AI Alliance. When he isn’t doing ethics you can find him with his wife and children, unless there’s rock climbing to be done.

Michele Colucci

Managing Partner/COO at DigitalDX Ventures

Michele Colucci is a lawyer, serial entrepreneur, and Founder of companies in the legal, technology, retail and entertainment spaces. She has extensive experience operating in highly regulated verticals and has focused on issues from management to legal (employment, corporate, international, litigation, torts, negotiations, business strategy and marketing). Her last company focused on the application of big data and artificial intelligence in legal technology.

She has worked in law firms (Hughes Hubbard & Reed), ran her own media production company, owned and operated a chain of retain stores in the political space, ran a political fundraising venue, and founded a legal technology company.

Michele is a Huffington Post blogger on female entrepreneurship and an award winning expert on E-Local. She was voted by the Business Journal as a Silicon Valley Woman of Influence, featured in the cover article of the American Bar Journal as a Leading Woman in Legal Technology, a Person to Watch by Gentry Magazine, and has been featured in stories on NBC, Inc. Magazine, The Mercury News, and Redbook. She has served as a regular guest lecture and mentor in the Stanford School of Engineering in both Global Marketing and Entrepreneurship and has lectured in classes at the USC Law School, and and others.

Michele has a Bachelors degree from Georgetown University, a law degree from Georgetown Law School, and a Masters in Fine Arts from the American Film Institute. She has authored five patents in the technology space. Currently she is working with the Nobel Laureate Foundation as they expand their global footprint to help young scientists chosen from all over the world to attend their summer program where they connect, learn and interact with Nobel Laureates in their field of study. She speaks three languages, and lives in Silicon Valley with her four children.

 

Kamesh Raghavendra

Chief Product Officer at The Hive

Kamesh Raghavendra serves as the Chief Product Officer at The Hive, a venture fund and studio that co-creates startups focused on AI-powered applications in the enterprise. He funds, builds and launches ventures with a data-driven, AI-centric approach towards re-imagining business processes and rewiring trade & commerce between organizations. He has co-created many ventures that augment, automate and amplify decision making in IT service management, datacenter services, robotic process automation, business process transformation and industrial design & operations. Kamesh is also active in building ventures that govern information harvesting from data through automated data provenance and privacy-preservation. Previously, Kamesh served in a number of leadership roles at NetApp, and had a stint at Goldman Sachs trading mortgage-based securities during the cusp of the 2008 crisis.

Alex Lamb

SF author, Neo-Generalist, and Chief Data Scientist, ProductOps

Alexander Lamb splits his time between writing science fiction, running communication skills workshops, conducting complex systems research, and working as a data science consultant. He also wrote the foreword to Lorien Pratt’s book Link: How Decision Intelligence Connects Data, Actions, and Outcomes for a Better World.

In his day jobs, Alex has worked on a myriad of unrelated software projects, including mobile applications for biologists and publishers, risk analysis software for banks, large-scale simulation of battlefields for the US Army, hyper-optimized software interfaces for major US corporations, and novel machine-learning applications for Silicon Valley start-ups. These days, he heads up the data group at productOps, a cloud-focused consulting firm in Santa Cruz, CA.

He has also held the position of Research Scholar in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Dept. at Princeton University, where he worked on computer simulations of complex systems. His research has spanned the simulation of gossip, the formation of human cultural norms, the rise of wealth inequality in society, new algorithms for general machine intelligence, and the modeling of the Planck-length structure of spacetime. He has several blogs, one focussed on behavior science and improv, the other on algorithmic approaches to physics.
